What is Zelgor?
Zelgor contains the active ingredient Abiraterone or Abiraterone Acetate. This is a new medicine that can treat men suffering from Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer (mCRPC) - a form of prostate cancer that is resistant to hormonal or surgical treatment. Abiraterone is prescribed as a treatment plan along with prednisone when:
- medical and surgical treatments have been ineffective
- prostate cancer is still growing
- PSA levels are still rising
- cancer has spread outside the prostate
How is Zelgor used?
Your doctor will prescribe you a specific dosage of Abiraterone and a specific dosage of prednisone. Only take the dosage prescribed by your doctor and follow their instructions exactly. Usually you will be required to take the two medicines together once daily.
Abiraterone tablets are swallowed whole with a glass of water and taken on an empty stomach. Do not eat for two hours before and one hour after taking Abiraterone.
Contraception must be used during sexual intercourse while taking Abiraterone if your partner is pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Adverse effects
More serious side effects of Abiraterone include the following:
- hypertension (high blood pressure)
- hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood)
- edema (fluid retention)
If you notice any of the following while taking Abiraterone, contact your doctor:
dizziness
- fast heartbeats
- feel faint or lightheaded
- headache
- confusion
- muscle weakness
- pain in your legs
- swelling in your legs or feet
- adrenal problems
- liver problems
The most common side effects of Abiraterone are:
- weakness
- joint swelling or pain
- swelling in your legs or feet
- hot flushes
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- cough
- high blood pressure
- shortness of breath
- urinary tract infection
- bruising
- low red blood cells (anemia) and low blood potassium levels
- high blood sugar levels, high blood cholesterol and triglycerides
- certain other abnormal blood tests
Warnings
Abiraterone is only to be taken by men. Women or children should not take Abiraterone. Abiraterone tablets must not be handled by women who are pregnant or wanting to become pregnant.
Abiraterone should not be taken by patients who:
- have heart problems
- have liver problems
- have adrenal problems
- have any other medical conditions
- are taking any other medicines or supplements
