What is Zovirax Cold Sore Cream?
Zovirax Cream (Acyclovir) 5% is used to treat the infections of skin and mucous membranes, caused by Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, including herpes labialis (cold sores).
How is Zovirax Cold Sore Cream used?
It is recommended to apply Zovirax Cream five times a day (approximately every four hours). The medication is applied in thin layer onto the affected and adjacent areas of the skin and mucous membranes.
The minimum duration of treatment is four days. In case the sores are not healing, the treatment can be extended up to ten days. In case the symptoms persist for over ten days, consult your physician.
The cream is applied either with a cotton pad or with clean hands to avoid any contamination of the affected areas.
Adverse effects
Local reactions: occasionally - short-term reddening, itching, peeling, burning or tingling of the skin in the area of application.
Allergic reactions: rarely - allergic dermatitis (mostly related to the reaction to auxiliary substances); in individual cases - angioedema.
Warnings
To achieve the best treatment results it is recommended to start using the medication once you notice the first symptoms of the disease (such as burning, itching, tingling, tightness and redness).
Consult your physician if the cold sores on your lips are severe.
It is not recommended to apply the cream on the mucous membranes of the mouth and eyes, as it may cause local inflammation.
In the course of the treatment of genital herpes, it is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse or use condoms, because applying Zovirax Cream does not prevent the transmission of the virus.
The patients with the immune deficiency must strictly comply with the physician’s recommendations in the course of the treatment of any infectious disease.
