What is Zyban?
Zyban with the active ingredient bupropion hydrochloride is used in combination with support techniques to help stop smoking. It can help decrease nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the urge to smoke. By quitting smoking it will decrease the risk of cancer and heart and lung diseases. The medication has the same properties as certain antidepressants and some people may use it to treat mental or mood disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
How is Zyban used?
Zyban is usually taken orally twice per day or as directed by a doctor. The doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart and with some food to prevent an upset stomach. The medication also has a non sedating effect and should not be taken close to bedtime. The tablets should be taken whole and not crushed, split or chewed to prevent the release of all the drug at once. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's reaction to the medication and the condition being treated but the recommended maximum dosage per day is 300mg. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as it may cause withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Zyban may cause side effects such as:
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Stomach pain
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Excessive sweating
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Seizures
- Confusion
- Hallucination
- Chest pain
- Muscle pain
- Irregular heartbeat
- Tremors
Warnings
The medication should not be taken within 14 days of taking any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants as it may cause an unwanted drug interaction.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Zyban is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
