What is Zyban?
Zyban contains the active ingredient bupropion hydrochloride and is used in combination with support techniques to help stop smoking. It can decrease the urge to smoke by decreasing nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Quitting smoking can help decrease the risk of lung cancer and other lung or heart diseases. The tablet has the same properties as certain antidepressants and can be also used to treat mood or mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
How is Zyban used?
Zyban should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually once daily to start and slowly increasing the dosage to 2 times per day. Take the doses at least 8 hours apart along with some food to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition but the maximum recommended dosage is 300mg per day. The tablets should be taken whole and not crushed, chewed or cut to prevent too much of the drug from being released at one time. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as it may cause unwanted side effects or severe withdrawal symptoms.
