What is Zyloric?
Zyloric containing the active ingredient allopurinol is considered a xanthine oxidase inhibitor type of medication. The medication works by reducing the production of excess uric acid to prevent tiny grit like crystals from forming in the joints and tendons causing inflammation, swelling and pain. The tablets can be used to treat gout or kidney stones and to decrease uric acid levels in patients who are receiving cancer treatment. It can be used as a long term prevention of gout flare ups but cannot be used to treat gout attacks.
How is Zyloric used?
Zyloric is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication should ideally be taken after a meal along with a full glass of water. It is important to drink plenty of water while using the drug. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication thinking the treatment is not working as you may have more gout attacks for the first several months while the body removes extra uric acid.
Adverse effects
Patients using Zyloric may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Upset stomach
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Drowsiness
- Vomiting
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Painful urination
- Change in the amount of urine
- Jaundice
- Visual disturbances
- Signs of infection
- Unusual weight loss
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Zyloric is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
