Why does your appetite increase in the cold season? Part 2

In a previous article, we began to learn about the problem of increasing appetite in the cold season and, as a result, weight gain. Let’s continue to find out why this is happening.

Movement

As a rule, during the cold season, we move little and spend most of our time in premises – apartments, offices, etc. As a result, we eat a lot and do not waste energy. Motion is the easiest way to deal with this situation. It is not necessary (and undesirable) to exhaust yourself in the gym with high-intensity training. You can do what you like, especially since winter gives a lot of variants of different outdoor sports – skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and skating. Ordinary walks in a snow-covered park also will be very useful. And in principle, you must try to walk more, climb stairs instead of an elevator, avoid public transport (especially since in the cold season it is usually crowded).

Short light day

Another cause of increased appetite is the too-short daylight hours in fall and winter. If you need to get up, we can argue, you wake up in dark. Does working day end until six in the evening? Then you will be back to home in the dark. The lack of light not only provokes drowsiness and fatigue but also causes a constant feeling of hunger. Our body is “deceived”, it seems that there is a constant night, and at night you need to sleep rather than work. The blame for everything is the increased production of melatonin – sleep hormone that is synthesized in the dark. And if you do not see the “white world”, then it is produced constantly. And the lack of (deceptive, of course) sleep the body tries to compensate for the food.
Try to create maximum lighting in the room where you work. Do you get up early in the morning? Turn on all the lamps, do not save – it only takes until you get to work. The same goes for the office. Don’t be content with the scanty daylight from the window. Turn on the lamps – both ceiling and table. Yes, by the way, you will also remove the load from the eyes, which is difficult to work at dusk. In the afternoon, for example, during a lunch break, when it is quite light outside, try to take a walk, even if there is no sun.
And you must try to get enough sleep at night – for this reason, it is necessary to remove all provocative factors from your bedroom.

Lack of fluid

Yes, we need water not only in the hot summer. In the cold season, we often forget about water, that it is necessary to drink it in sufficient quantity. In the heat, of course, you want to drink more, but in the cold – not very. Meanwhile, the body still feels thirsty. But the signal that body wants to drink, we perceive as the signal that it wants to eat. The fact is that the same brain department is responsible for thirst and hunger. And the desire to drink a glass of water, we can perceive as the desire to eat something delicious. Dehydration can also occur due to too dry air in rooms that have many heating appliances.
It’s simple: want to eat? Drink a glass of water. If the famine does not go away 10-15 minutes after that, you may need food and not water. And remember when you ate last.
