Hypothyroidism is a decrease in the functionality of the thyroid gland. In the presence of this disease, before starting yoga you need to consult a doctor and choose exercises individually. It is important to follow all the principles and rules, otherwise the effect of yoga may not appear or become negative.
Yoga has certain rules and techniques, compliance with which will harmoniously affect the body without serious consequences. Therefore, when practicing yoga, follow these rules:
- exercise regularly. Even during the working day, you can find time for yoga.
- do not rush. The main thing is to start mastering everything – starting with the theoretical foundations and easy, basic exercises, and only then try to perform more complex. If pain occurs, the exercise should be stopped. Stretching should be compensated by bending. Exercises for legs and arms should be performed alternately.
- Perform complex exercises under the supervision of a trainer who will always tell you how to perform the exercise correctly and correct your mistakes. After understanding the mistakes at the initial stage, the body will not remember them and will not make them automatically in the future.
- the main thing is not to despair. If you can’t do an exercise right away, don’t despair, keep trying. You may want to get some rest, but don’t stop doing yoga. Also, positive results should not be expected immediately, they appear in a few months.
Remember that yoga is not a substitute for medication (such as Eltroxin, Tiromel), but a supplement to it.
With hypothyroidism, exercise will be useful to improve blood flow, to ensure the dominance of the sympathetic nervous system, rather than the parasympathetic. It is worth paying attention to the exercises on the shoulders and exercises during which the head is at waist level. Such exercises will improve the blood circulation of the thyroid gland, and thus have a positive effect on its functioning.
Emphasis should be placed on stretching and relaxing movements that will not create an increased load on the thyroid gland. Let’s consider the main yoga exercises that are useful in hypothyroidism:
- shoulder stand – for thyroid problems, this pose is one of the best yoga asanas. It stimulates the thyroid gland and also stimulates other glands in the head such as the pituitary and pineal glands.
- Viparita Karani pose.
- tilt the head to the knee (Janu Shirshasana).
- fish pose.
- plow position (halasana).
- cat pose (marjariasana).
- sun salutation (surya namaskar) – helps to control weight.
In addition, for these yoga poses, use special breathing techniques – pranayama, namely: kapalabhati (shining skull), nadi shodhana (alternating breathing), bhastrika and ujai. All of these methods help relieve the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
