What is ellaOne?
ellaOne (Ulipristal Acetate) is for emergency contraception after an unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure. It has been shown to prevent about 60% of expected pregnancies, and prevents more pregnancies than emergency contraception with levonorgestrel. This medicine should be taken as soon as possible after sex. Also it can be taken at anytime in the menstrual cycle. ellaOne is suitable for any woman of childbearing age, including adolescents.
How is ellaOne used?
One tablet is normally can be taken as soon as possible in 120 hours (5days) after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure. It can be taken with or without food.
You should contact your doctor or healthcare if you are feeling unwell after taking this product. ellaOne can be taken at any time during menstrual cycle, also no more than one time in the same menstrual cycle. It is suitable for any woman of childbearing age, including adolescents.
Adverse effects
Possible common side effects of ellaOne (Ulipristal Acetate) include:
- Headache, Dizziness
- Muscle Pain, Back Pain,
- Fatigue or Tiredness
- Breast tenderness
- Nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort
- Vomiting or Diarrhoea
- Depression or Sleeping trouble
Warnings
If your period is late or have symptoms of pregnancy (morning sickness, heavy breast) before taking ellaOne, you may already be pregnant, please do a pregnancy test in order to make sure you are not already pregnant. Do not take this drug if you are already pregnant or think you are pregnant. This drug is not for use to end an existing pregnancy. Also you must tell your Doctor or Pharmacist if you are suffering from severe asthma or liver disease.
Do not use this drug more than one time in the same menstrual cycle.
If you are suffering asthma or liver disease. Other possible symptoms include difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, swelling, chest tightness, skin rashes, and hives.
After taking this drug, you may have your next menstrual period a few days earlier or later than expected. If your period is more than 7 days later than expected, you should get a pregnancy test and follow up with your doctor.
Do not use this drug while breastfeeding. If you want to breastfeed after taking this drug, wait one week and express and discard your breast milk during that week in order to stimulate lactation.
