What is m-Enalapril?
m-Enalapril works by decreasing certain chemicals in the brain to relax blood vessels and allow blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump blood more efficiently. The active ingredient enalapril maleate belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. The medication can be used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and can help decrease the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems. Some patients may also use it to treat congestive heart failure.
How is m-Enalapril used?
m-Enalapril should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times per day. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Your doctor may start you on a small dose and gradually increase the dosage over several weeks to prevent side effects. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.
Adverse effects
m-Enalapril may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Change in taste or appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Dry cough
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Excessive fatigue or weakness
- Signs of infection
- Jaundice
- Change in the amount of urine
- Sleeping problems
- Fainting
- High potassium blood levels
- Blurred vision
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
m-Enalapril is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
